Second biopsy of breast - I'm so scared and don't know what to expect

I went for my mammogram on 17th march to be asked back on 31st. Had one mammogram then an ultra sound then a biopsy where they took 6 samples. It was scary, I hate needles. Then put metal clip in took another mammogram packed my wound well and said I'd get my results in 5 days. Due to bank holidays my appointment on 9th was cancelled then booked another to go in for my results on 15th to get another call today to be told I need another biopsy not even told me why either. Im crazy nervous and I dont know what to expect on my 2nd biopsy. I'm scared, anxious too. Does it mean I have cancer?

  • Hi Flyingwithoutwings,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

All this chopping and changing can be very frustrating. The reason for another biopsy is usually because the first one didn't give a very clear reading or the sample was taken from the wrong area. Cancer is only usually detected by the results of a biopsy. It is possible that they may take a different type of biopsy next time to give them a better view. It is routine to put the metal clip in where the suspect tissue is detected. This helps the clinicians to find it if you need surgery. Don't be afraid to ask why you need another biopsy. I sincerely hope that it all turns out well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Flying without wings and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Jolamine has given good advice. It is not uncommon that the doctors need to re biopsy an area as often the place that they have identified as suspicious is so small. No one can tell you anything without the results of the biopsy so try not to think too far ahead.

The clip is helpful for the doctors in identifying the area that needs to be biopied.

Remember even though it is supportive hearing from other members of the forum every situation is slightly different.

You are welcome to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi flyingwithout wings.  I've just been called back following my mammogram and i've now got an anxious wait of a week before my next appointment.  You are not alone.  I am scared too.  I suffer with anxiety at the best of times but its off the scale at the moment.  Everyone is telling me to stay positive and keep calm but unfortunately I am scarred by losing my husband to melanoma nine years ago.  The sensible half of me knows that if we have anything catching it early is key and mammograms are the best way to do this.  You are doing the right thing getting every test done and even if you don't get the all clear they have caught it early and it will be treatable.  I wish you all the luck in the world.  You are not alone - I will keep checking your posts for upates,  Sending love and best wishes.
