When to call the doctor?

Hi there,

I had successful treatment for Non Hodgkins MALT lymphoma caused by H. Pylori in spring 2024, I also was diagnosed with gastritis and Barrets Oesophagus. I'm noticing a persistent cough that has been with me for the last couple months and a lot of acid reflux (which I never had before). Also a dull pain is starting to develop in the same location as before. from time to time.  Is it possible that H Pylori/ MALT lymphoma can come back?

Am I wasting the GPs time by getting in touch and asking for a follow up or do you think Rennies will sort it?

Thanks

  • Hi JMcB and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to read that you have required treatment for MALT lymphoma but delighted to hear that the treatment was successful.

I appreciate your concerns over your new symptoms, but I'm afraid we are unable to diagnose or tell anyone if anything is the matter.

It is possible for H. pylori to come back, although this does not happen to everyone. If the bacteria comes back, it can sometimes cause stomach irritation again. In a small number of people, MALT Lymphoma can return, but most people do very well after treatment.

Your acid reflux and ongoing cough may be linked to your gastritis or Barretts oesophagusReflux can sometimes cause a cough, throat irritation, or chest discomfort. This is quite common and does not always mean something serious is happening.

While it’s possible that your symptoms are not related to cancer, because of your past history, it is important not to ignore it, although it does not mean the lymphoma has returned.

The best next step is to speak to your GP or hospital team. They may suggest tests, such as checking for H. pylori again or looking at ways to better control your reflux.

I hope you know more soon and everything is ok.

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards,

    Nurse Tina
