Experience of UTI 6 weeks following anterior resection and antibiotics causing nausea and diarrhoea. Anyone else go through this?

My husband developed had stinging on peeing following his anterior resection  He saw the surgeon who said this was to be expected. He now has a urinary infection and had IV antibiotics yesterday in A&E followed by Nitrofuradentoin orally. This is causing diarrhoea and nausea and he is feeling miserable. Has anyone else had this experience following this surgery. He does not have a stoma and would appear to have healed well  The resected specimen has clear marginx so that's all good news but between bowel issues and now husband's urinary infection  there does not seem to be any respite for him. Any similar experience stories and resolution would be comforting.

  • Hi there Moodle and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husband and how unwell he is feeling.

Unfortunately having a UTI itself can be pretty unpleasant and i'm afraid antibiotics can also add to this causing the diarrhoea and nausea. Do let the doctor know how he is feeling in case they can prescribe some anti sickness to help ease this.

In the meantime if he can keep his fluids up this is important to prevent dehydration alongside trying to eat something little and often may also help.

Hopefully once the infection has passed and the antibiotics are out of his system he will start to feel much better.

If you are unable to get hold of the doctor or in an emergency call NHS 111 for advice.

I hope he is feeling better soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
