It’s normal to feel confused, as you may see different advice online.

The most important thing is to follow the advice given by your own medical team, as they know exactly what was done and how your wound looks.

The advice you were given after your surgery is safe and commonly used. Cleaning the wound and putting Vaseline on it helps keep it moist, which supports healing.

Cambridge University Hospital recommends leaving it uncovered  but if it is likely to get dirty or be rubbed by clothing you can apply a light dressing or plaster, which should be changed daily. Leeds Teaching Hospital advise you speak to your local pharmacist about suitable dressings to apply.

If you notice increasing redness, swelling, pain, oozing, or if you are worried at any point, you should contact your hospital team for advice.
