Cytokines Storm

Hi Everyone

I was diagnosed with MDS low risk last September and the six weekly blood transfusions seem to be keeping me quite well. However I have a question… 15 months previously I had a very bad post op infection which led to sepsis and a very high CRP of 160 and WCC of 19.9. I understand that events such as these can cause a sleeping, dormant or sub clinical MDS condition to “make itself known” in the way that it did for me. Has anyone heard of this cause and effect? Thanks

Bobby

  • Hello Bobby and thanks for posting

MDS usually develops slowly over years and can be present before it’s diagnosed.

A severe infection like sepsis puts huge strain on the body and bone marrow. This kind of stress does not cause MDS, but it can reveal or “unmask” MDS that was already quietly there and the sepsis may have helped to uncover it sooner.

The fact that your MDS is low risk and transfusions are helping is a positive sign.

Your haematology team are there to support you and do ask them any further questions you have about your condition. If you have a specialist nurse involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use to you. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Good afternoon Celene

Thank you very much for your reply confirming what I had already suspected: it’s always good to find a reason for things and this is no exception. The sweet spot for this is that, having been sent for a CT scan by my Haematologist, this uncovered breast cancer which was at an early stage. 2 months later, mastectomy complete, no signs in sentinel nodes, cured of breast cancer, slight reduction in other bosom (I hate word “boob” - am I alone in this?? )  and I’m sporting a streamlined version of myself. Can’t be bothered with prosthesis or surgical implant. … Without the MDS diagnosis the Breast Cancer might have raised its head and I might not have had such a good outcome in time to come. Thank you again. You’ve been very kind. Hugs
