Precancerous polyp

Hi I am a 64 year old obese female, I have previously had bowel cancer in 2010 the cancerous polyp was removed with no further treatment but with a watch and wait approach. During a recent scan it was discovered the lining of my womb was enlarged. I had a hysteroscopy and they removed a polyp and took a biopsy. I had the results last Thursday, the polyp was precancerous but the biopsy was fine. The consultant wants to insert a coil to release hormones, he also stated I need to loose weight, I have recently lost just over a stone and am continuing this journey. I am worried about having the coil due to a number of reasons one being the possible side effect of gaining weight. I also don’t like to just blindly take medications unless there is no other choice. I’m also autistic so tend to over think things and examine all aspects before moving forward. I would like some help please with my decision, possible alternative options to help me move forward.

thank you

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are having problems with polyps, and want an alternative treatment than what has been suggested.

As we are not doctors we cannot give a medical opinion, however I can tell you that the treatment plan of a coil inserted and continuing to lose weight, are the best options for you.

Well done on your weight loss so far, that will certainly help towards lowering risk of further problems.

We have further information on the link between obesity and cancer if helpful to read.

This on our web pages talks through the risk of womb cancer . You will see that the coil is beneficial in helping by releasing hormones directly into the womb, reducing the likelihood of the growth of cancer cells.

Do speak to your doctor further if you need more information specific to your situation, but if you want to talk through the information given here then do call our helpline on 0808 80 4040. Lines are open mon- fri, 9-5.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
