Pain in abdomen, back, chest and shoulder - side effects from treatment have increased immensely and I'm finding it hard to cope

Hello I’m suffering bad pain in my abdomen and back it is very painful and despite the paracetamol it returns every 2/3hours. The pain also moves to my chest and left shoulder.

I was on Lonsurf but was taken off them due to vomiting.

Ive had no chemo now for 5/6 weeks as my oncologist wants me to get a ct scan.

The side effects from treatment has increased immensely and I was completely wiped out.

But I’m now in excruciating pain every day and finding it hard to cope.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Regards Athena

  • Hi there Athena and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the pain and other side effects you are experiencing, it sounds like you are having a very difficult time.

It is good your doctor has arranged for you to have a scan but it is important that they know about the level of pain you are in so they can prescribe you other medications to try and help with this.

As I am sure you know there are different causes for and types of pain and it is important this is properly assessed to find the right things to help.

In the meantime continue to take over the counter pain relief such as paracetamol regularly but also try some heat therapy such as a hot water bottle, heat pack or warm bath to see if this helps as well. Try and keep a note of when the pain is at its greatest and whether it gets worse after eating or going to the toilet in case the foods you are eating are affecting this.

There is a section of information about coping physically with cancer that you may find useful to look at with different sections about various symptoms and side effects.

Do speak with your specialist team or GP as soon as you can to let them know about how this is affecting you so they can best support you too.

I hope things start to get better for you soon but please get back in touch any time. You are also welcome to ring us if you prefer on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care
