Fit Test - what does a borderline result mean?

I have just received results of my recent FIT test, it says borderline, what does that mean.  Is that serious?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

It can be a worry to get a positive or borderline FIT test result but try not to over think things for now.

The role of the FIT test is to detect microscopic blood in the stools. There can be many causes for blood to be there including piles, polyps, inflammatory bowel conditions and sometimes cancer but in most situations this won't be the case.

A borderline FIT usually means the result is just on the border of the threshold meaning it's neither negative nor positive.

Speak with your doctor to get a better understanding of your situation and what needs to happen next. Sometimes a borderline test will need a repeat of the FIT test. Or you may be sent for further investigations such as a colonoscopy where a camera is passed through into the bowel to inspect it more closely for where the blood may be coming from.

As I say try not to worry and I hope you know more soon.

Do get back in touch if needed and feel free to call the nurses on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer, we are here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes
