  • Hello and thank you for getting in touch,

I’m sorry to hear that your X-ray has shown a shadow on your lung and that you now need further tests. Waiting for scans and results can be an anxious time, and it’s completely understandable to feel unsettled.

At the moment, the CT scan is the best way to understand what the shadow might be. Until those results are available, no one can say for certain what it is. It may help to know that lung shadows can appear for many different reasons, and most are not cancer. Common causes include infections, inflammation, or scarring, but it’s important that the team check fully so you can get clear answers.

This waiting period can feel very difficult because it’s a time when you don’t have all the information, and it’s easy for your mind to jump to the worst-case scenario. Some people find it helpful to focus on one step at a time and to keep to their usual routines where possible, as this can help manage the worry.

I hope you have family or friends you can lean on while you wait. If you’d like to talk things through, our nurses are here to support you. You can call our helpline free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Take care,

    Jemma
