Bowel cancer - partner diagnosed with stage 3. Is it normal to bleed when going to the toilet? It seems to be getting progressively worse

Hello to everyone

my partner has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer stage 3

he has an appointment with the cancer specialist in two weeks time to talk about the way forward

we have seen the surgeon who explained that because of the size of the tumour chemo and radiotherapy will be needed before to try and shrink it

my question today is it it normal to bleed when going to the toilet? It seems to be getting progressively worse

it seems pointless going to gp or hospital as they explained it’s too big to operate on at the moment

so is it just a waiting game until we see the cancer specialist

and is bleeding a common symptom?

Thank you in advance x

  • Hello Jocon and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your partner.

Tumours can bleed particularly if they are quite large. If the bleeding continues or gets heavier do encourage your partner to get in touch with the surgeon or specialist nurse at the hospital as they may want to see him at an earlier date. Your partners bloods will be checked before he has any treatment to check that his levels are within normal limits.

if you are unable to get an earlier appointment it might be worth your partner being assessed by his GP and perhaps having a blood test if they feel that is appropriate.

I hope this helps. I can understand that it is an unsettling time waiting for his appointment but hopefully when he has been seen and you both know more things will be a little bit easier.

Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you would like to talk things through.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
