Diep reconstruction - 3 years on and recently it feels like my Diep has got bigger. There's also a red patch on my scar. Who do I contact about this?

Hi, I had masectomy, chemo and radiation in 2019/2020. 2023 I had Diep reconstruction. Pleased with results and have been carrying on which my life. I decided not to have phase 2 as being in my 70’s one op is enough. The scar across my Diep has always stayed red, thought to be that the radiation may have caused the skin to be thin. Just recently it feels like my Diep has got bigger the muscle in my chest is firm. But worryingly is a red patch and a small raised bit has appeared on the scar Do I go back to the hospital who did the surgery or the cancer ward at the  hospital or is my GP the first port of call? Thank you for any replies Silver

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are worried about some new changes in your DIEP reconstruction scar.

Any new change in your reconstructed breast like new redness, a raised patch, or the area feeling firmer should be checked. The best thing to do is to contact your GP. They will look at it and if needed will refer you to the breast team.

Often these changes turn out to be scar tissue or other harmless effects after surgery and radiotherapy. But it's always best to get it checked just to be on the safe side.

I hope that everything turn out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
