Waiting worry - finally have breast clinic appointment but I've had to wait 12 weeks. My anxiety is through the roof

I saw my doctor several weeks ago after finding a pea size lump in my left breast. Dr agreed that she thought something was going on. I have been given a clinic appointment but it will be 12 weeks date wise after seeing my Dr. I since have had a pulling sensation in breast and my anxiety is through the roof. I am almost 60 yrs old.

  • Hello Babychamgirl and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

It might be worth starting with the breast clinic and ask if they have an earlier appointment or a cancellation.

It is difficult to say very much as we are not involved in your care. If your GP had been concerned that you needed to be seen under the urgent cancer referral you should have had an appointment sooner. It might be worth letting your GP know that your appointment is not for 12 weeks. She may be able to help move the appointment forward or refer you to a different breast clinic. Do let your GP know how anxious it is making you feel.

Do try if you can to take one step at a time. The majority of women referred to breast clinics don't have cancer. There are many other benign (non cancerous) conditions that women can get.

I hope you know more soon.

Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you want to talk things through.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
