Need help with bone pain. Is there anything I can try that actually works?

This question is for the nurses and basically anyone that can help me.  I live in England and was first diagnosed with cancer 6 yrs ago.  I am now terminal, and the cancer is in the bone in my right leg.  I know that treating bone pain is notoriously hard, and I would like to ask the nurses and anyone else who might read this if there is anything that I can try that actually WORKS.  The morphine helps a little bit, but not much.  If there is anyone that can help me, I would be very grateful.  Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation and the bone pain you are experiencing. This must be a very difficult time for you.

Morphine can be adjusted to a higher dose to help manage your pain or a different painkilling drug or pain patches may be considered.

A short course of steroids can sometimes be given as well as bone strengthening medications to help reduce bone pain.

Sometimes radiotherapy to the leg can often reduce bone pain even with one or a few treatments.

Nerve pain medications may sometimes help if nerves are involved. A nerve block injection may help if the pain is in one specific area

Your specialist team are better placed to advise you further on managing your pain as they are familiar with all your medical details.

We also have information on how pain may be managed on our website. Sometimes it’s trial and error to get the right combination of interventions that may help.

I’m not sure if you are being supported by a palliative care team, often they are known as Macmillan nurses. They are experts in controlling cancer symptoms such as pain and can provide emotional support. If you don’t have a palliative care team involved in your care you could ask your GP or hospital team to refer you.

I hope this reply is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
