Two months to live - mum got given this news the other day. Do they usually tell you this? I think I'm in shock

Hi everyone,

My mum has told me the drs have said she has two months to live. Do they do this? Might they say that to make the patient prepared for the worst but death is likely further away or does two months to live really mean sooner. I think I am in shock.

  • Hello Kirby1234,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. This must be a very difficult time for your family. I can understand that this must have been a shock when you were not expecting it.

It is difficult to be completely accurate on how long some one has got but the doctors are basing their information on other patients who had a similar cancer. I am not sure what type of cancer your mum has got and whether she has had any treatment.

Macmillan has some general information on what is a prognosis.

I would try and get your mum's permission so you can talk this through with either her doctors or her specialist nurse who maybe able to explain in more detail about your mum's outlook. Sometimes it can help to have these difficult conversations on your own so you are not afraid to ask questions about your mum's situation.

I do hope that you are managing to get some support from other members of your family or with close friends.

Even though it is helpful and supportive hearing form other members of the forum do remember that every situation is very different.

You are very welcome to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

All the best and take care,

    Catherine
