Delayed Smear, need advice please

Hi I’m 26

i had a high risk HPV smear in July 2024, I fell pregnant and gave birth on the 8th of January 2026

during vaginal examinations during pregnancy they did notice some cervical erosions and told me to get my smear as soon as I’ve gave birth (I had a c section)

during my postpartum recovery I would not stop bleeding and they discovered I had retained placenta from a scan, I had a D&C on the 13th of feb. My GP said I need to wait 12 weeks for a smear after this,

I also have a coil booked in for the 26th of march which then would delay the smear for another 12 weeks!

I did ask if I could have a smear then a coil fitting after but again they said smear can not be preformed till after 12 weeks of d&C

im really worried and not sure what way to go down or is it just waiting

thank you

  • Hi peachmx and thank you for posting.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, although it sounds like you have been through a lot with the bleeding you experienced after giving birth.

Waiting for tests and test results can be a stressful time and cause anxiety, especially because your tests have been delayed.

A cervical screening shouldn’t be done until twelve weeks after a D&C. This allows the cervix to heal properly, and testing earlier can lead to discomfort or an unreliable result. Even with a previous high‑risk HPV result, this delay is still considered safe, as HPV-related changes usually develop very slowly.

In terms of your coil fitting, it’s generally better to have the smear first and then fit the coil afterwards, once the twelve‑week healing period has passed. I don't know if it is possible to change the date of your appointment for the coil.

I know the waiting can feel frustrating, but allowing time for proper healing isn’t putting you at increased risk.

It may be helpful to talk through any concerns you have with your GP or practice nurse, who knows your situation.

Please feel free to get back to us if you have any further questions

    Best wishes,

    Jemma
