Potential breast cancer

Hello,

My wife (35)  has noticed a lump in her breast and has just had a GP appt to check it out.  The GP has told us it is abnormal and referred her to an urgent appt at our local hospital. The lump is circa 1inch apparently.

She is also breastfeeding currently  with our 3 month old if if that is any extra knowledge worth knowing.

Is there any knowledge / information anyone can give on everything and also what i can do to support her as my head is all over the place and I want to make sure I am doing anything I can to support her.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I appreciate this is a worrying time for you both but try not to let your thoughts run away with themselves too much for now.

As you have said breast changes are common when breast feeding and it isn't unusual to notice lumpier and denser breasts at this time.

It is reassuring that your wife has been examined and referred to the breast clinic, just to be on the safe side. There they will be able to examine her again and run some tests such as an ultrasound and mammogram and possibly a biopsy to find out more.

There are many reasons for breast lumps and the most common causes are fluid filled cysts and a build up of fatty tissue known as a fibroadenoma. Most breast lumps in younger women especially are found to be benign (not cancer) and the majority of women referred to a breast clinic won't go on to be diagnosed with cancer.

Try and take things one step at a time for now. Avoid googling and searching things up but rather keep yourself and your mind busy with the normal routine of every day life until the appointment comes around.

It is good your wife has your support and knows you are there for her but at this time there isn't much more you can do until she is seen.

I hope her appointment comes through soon and that everything will turn out okay.

Do get back in touch if you need to or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
