Pain after liver resection - is this part of the healing process or something more serious?

I had liver resection (about 30%) and gallbladder removal 12 weeks ago. Recovery has been good until the past few days. I have started with intermittent stabbing pains in the area of the resection, plus general soreness and tightness across the whole of my stomach and moving into my right side.

Is this a common phenomenon as part of the healing process or could there be a more serious reason?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time right now. You explained about some stabbing pains and discomfort after your surgery. As nurses, we can make some general comments about this, but we would suggest that you talk it over with your GP, or your hospital team. They are best placed to give you specific feedback on this.

Stabbing pains are usually due to some nerve endings being irritated. Sometimes this can happen after exertion, or soft tissue swelling. Your liver will be regrowing and will be taking up more room again in the abdominal area. I am not sure if you were given exercises to do after surgery. It might be useful to ask your GP about physiotherapy advice as to regards about building up your core abdominal muscles so they are stronger. Scar tissue starts to form and can be more fibrous and less elastic, so it is important to do some safe gentle stretching, under professional guidance.

I hope that this improves for you soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • Hello CSteve,

lost count of the amount of major damage inflicted upon my person over the years, but the Liver resection (60%) and gallbladder removal was one serious step up from shattered limbs. Mine was done 11 years ago but the memory of the recovery is etched firmly in my conciousness.

You state 12 weeks as if it should be near back to normal, when in fact your body has been treading water getting over the shock and coping , and has only now arrived at a place where it can set about rebuilding and repairing the trauma damage internally.Yes l know the external stitches heal quicker and can make seem that you have travelled that road to full recovery, but that is round one, the good news is that the pains you are feeling signifies round two has begun and your body is repairing and rebuilding.. l experienced much the same and it took a while for everything to settle down, but on the first anniversary of the op you would not know it had been done

Take care and keep smiling, you will have come far from the original diagnosis,

    David
