THY3F - advised to have half my thyroid removed but my lymph nodes have become swollen. A&E said they could be infected or that they've grown. What should I do?

Good afternoon,

I had a biopsy which came back benign, but had to have another one 3 months later which is a THY3F, the consultant has advised to have half my thyroid removed. This week my lymph nodes have become swollen and I have having pain at the back of my ear. I attended A&E today who have said it could be 2 things. I could have infected lymph nodes so he has given me antibiotics, if this hasn’t improved in a couple of days, I need to get back in touch with ent and tell them things have changed. It could be my nodule has grown etc. any advice would be great.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's happening and can appreciate that any new symptoms can prey on your mind.

THY3Fmeans that the thyroid biopsy couldn't clearly say if the nodule is benign or malignant. That's why you've been advised to have half your thyroid removed as this is the only way to get a definite answer.

Swollen painful lymph nodes behind the ear are much more commonly caused by infection, especially if they've come on suddenly and are tender.

It's best to follow the advice you've been given in A& E by taking your antibiotics and contact your ENT team if there has been no improvement after a few days.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Finished my antibiotics yesterday, don’t feel any better. Swollen neck and behind the ear. Also every time I eat a have a persistent cough which can last 10 minutes. Any advise would be great full

  • Hello Sharon1202 and thanks for your further post

It's probably best to make an appointment to see your GP. They can assess you and advise you further. Sometimes a second course of antibiotics may be needed.

If your GP thinks it's necessary, they may contact the ENT team to see what their advice is.

I hope things improve for you soon.

  • Thank you, I have been to the GP today. Who have said I need urgent bloods. I informed them that I was struggling to eat, but they never advised anything.  I must of been in the room 2 minutes

  • Hi there and thanks for the update

It is good to hear you managed to get an appointment with your GP and they have arranged urgent bloods.

I understand you are struggling with eating and this is probably due to the swelling in your neck so try and eat what you can sticking to very soft foods and plenty of fluids for now.

If of course it gets worse get in contact with your GP again or in an emergency call NHS 111 for advice and guidance.

I hope things improve and you know more very soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
