Smear result concern

I had my smear test 2 weeks ago. At the time the nurse thought she saw something unusual so went and got a second opinion. The nurse who gave a second opinion said there was nothing concerning. I was also informed that negative results would be uploaded to the app as soon as they were ready. I rang my GP yesterday and was told that the results were ready but waiting for doctor’s review. Still nothing on the app so can I assume the results are therefore abnormal?

last smear 3 years ago HPV negative, prior to that on and off HPV positive with LLETZ treatment 13 years ago.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid you can't assume that your smear test result is abnormal just because it hasn’t yet appeared on the NHS App. Many GP practices will hold results until a doctor signs them off, even when they’re completely normal.

The nurses at your appointment didn’t see anything worrying, and your last smear being HPV‑negative is encouraging. The delay is most likely administrative.

Easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help.

If you’re still feeling anxious, it’s perfectly fine to ask your GP practice if the doctor has now reviewed your results.

I hope you know more soon and that everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
