Problems with excessive urination

After my eradiotherapy treatment I am having a problem with the amount if urine I seem to be creating and having to visit the toilet constantly,  up to four or five times in an hour sometimes. I has a catheter fitted for a while but this was removed in early January. Since then this problem has been with me, particularly at night time. I have been doing the pelvic floor exercises regularly and had a CT scan yesterday. Any further thoughts on what I might do to alleviate my problem?

  • Hi Tiger1212 and thank you for your post.

I’m sorry to hear you are having such a hard time with your bladder following your radiotherapy treatment.

It is quite common to have bladder problems after radiotherapy. The bladder can become sore and swollen, which can make you feel like you need to wee very often, even if there is not much there.

I’m not sure for why you needed to have radiotherapy but there is information which you may find helpful on our website under

Bladder problems for treatment for prostate cancer and Long term side effects of radiotherapy for bladder cancer.

It is good that you have had a CT scan, this may help your hospital specialist understand what is going on.

If things do not get better, or if it is getting worse, please speak to your GP or hospital specialist. There are medicines that can help calm the bladder, and they can also check for things like an infection.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
