Astaxanthin - are there any risks taking this alongside Letrozole?

I would be grateful for some advice please.  I finished all treatment for HR and HER2 positive breast cancer in July 2025, apart from Letrozole which I need to take for 5 years.  Due to significant joint and muscle pain which has exasperated my sciatica and now causing increased hip pain I have been taking MSM and Boswellia which I have researched on the Memorial Sloan Kettering database and has no known interactions with Letrozole.  However I have read positive reviews of Astaxanthin for pain and inflammation but this is not on their database - are there any risks to taking alongside Letrozole or would it interfere with efficacy of the drug.  I am closed to oncology now and still awaiting a call back from the clinical nurse specialists.  Does anyone else take this supplement?  Thank you

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your past history and treatment for breast cancer and the current joint and muscle pains you are experiencing, this must be difficult for you.

As I am sure you are aware people do need to be very cautious when taking any supplements as they may interact with cancer and hormonal treatments causing more harm than good.

Unfortunately no one here can advise what is safe to take and it is best to wait for the specialist nurse to get back in touch or ask your doctor to make sure this is safe for you to take.

As you say many different supplements are mentioned on the Memorial sloan kettering website but not all and we would still advise patients to check with their doctor first.

I am sorry we can't be of more help on this occasion but hope you find some ways to relieve this pain and find a way forward.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
