Upcoming ENT Apt for right side neck and ear pain. Support Please

Hello,

I'm fresh here. Hope you're all doing well x

I have Silent Reflux and Post Nasal Drip. Since treatment for these, my symptoms are improving and in better control.

8 Weeks ago I started having right side neck pain (not a sore throat, but a structural neck pain) which causes daily right side ear pain.

I was referred to ENT last October for constant throat hoarseness. This still continues to affect me daily, even if not as obvious to others. but I know there's a raspiness and weakness.

I was on a routine waiting list, but was able to expiate my appointment and now have one offered later next week.

Despite these symptoms, I feel generally well, no weight loss and full blood count normal. But I'm starting to mentally prepare that I may have a head or neck cancer.

Please can anyone either give me advise on what to expect/ask during this appointment, what to ask/check for, or anyone can share their experience with similar experience (either diagnosed with a cancer or not).

I'm particularly anxious as I have a 5 year old son who is my whole world, and it's frightening thinking I may be fighting for my life right now

Hope you all are doing well x

  • Hello LWRIGHT16, and thank you for posting.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing symptoms that are causing worry. Waiting for hospital appointments can be stressful, and many people find this period particularly difficult.

Until you’ve been seen, no one can say what the cause might be. But it’s important to remember that there are many possible explanations for symptoms, and most of them are not cancer. At your appointment, the doctor will usually examine you and, if needed, may arrange further tests such as a scan.

It might help to let the doctor know what you’re most concerned about, including that you’re worried it could be cancer. Being open about this often helps them explain their thinking and offer reassurance.

In the meantime, taking things one step at a time can make this period a little easier. Some people find that keeping up with their usual routines, such as work or meeting friends, helps distract them from worry, though that’s not always easy for everyone.

If you’d like, you can also post in the pre‑diagnosis signs and symptoms section of the forum. More people may see your message there and share their experiences, which some find reassuring.

Please feel free to get back in touch with us anytime. You’re also very welcome to call our cancer information nurses on 0808 800 4040 (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm).

    Take care,

    Jemma
