Second opinion on treatment

Is it ok to ask for a second opinion on the treatment I have been prescribed?

  • Yes, but they may argue that, as your care plan was proposed by a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) which included several doctors, you don’t need one.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

Anyone can ask about getting a second opinion but as this is often with a specialist at a different hospital it can take time for this to be done. Because of this it may delay you receiving treatment and there is also a good chance that the proposed treatment to be the same.

Do speak with your own specialist you may have about the treatment they are suggesting and any concerns you may have about it. They should be able to explain why they think this is the best treatment for you and what to expect from receiving it.

As Davek has also commented most patients decisions about their treatment is made by a team of specialists looking at all the information about the cancer and the patient.

I hope this helps but do get back if you would like to. The helpline is open weekdays 9-5 if you prefer to call us.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
