Breast lump cytology results- C3 atypical

Hi,

I recently had an ultrasound and mammogram after finding a small lump in right breast. Consultant also found 3-4 enlarged lymph nodes under left armpit. Radiographer aspirated both lump and lymph nodes by fine needle aspiration. Radiographer explained lump was a simple cyst.

I received my letter 4 days later which stated “a 2mm simple cyst in right breast with internal echoes- in keeping with chronic cyst”

9 days later the breast nurse called to say lymph nodes were normal and reactive, however the lump has come back as C3 and a further biopsy will be needed.

Has anyone had results  like this?

Also found another larger hard lump in same breast in different area to lump that has already been aspirated.

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

I can appreciate that this might be an anxious time for you right now.

Breast cysts are quite common, and some women just seem to be more prone to developing them, in one breast, or both breasts. A C3 biopsy result means that the breast cells sampled are abnormal, (different from normal breast cells), uncertain, and probably benign. This is confirmed by a further core needle biopsy taken, which is sent off for further pathology testing to determine more detail about the cytology (cells involved).

There is more information to read on breast biopsy and C classifications. All breast lumps are always assessed individually, and it is important to always get these checked, for peace of mind. Unfortunately, breast cysts can recur, or you can develop new ones.

I hope that this reply helps,

    Wishing you the best,

    Vanda
