Possibly PV diagnosis

Hello
I am due to see a haematologist tomorrow following a referral due to raised red blood count levels with a suspected diagnosis of PV

I am very concerned and unsure what would happen next and how I will cope with any treatment, etc

If I do get diagnosed with this, will I be able to access support via face-to-face meetings or something similar?

Thank you

Jason

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

I can appreciate your questions around a possible diagnosis of PV and accessing support.

Usually, a hospital haematology team includes a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), who can provide information and support for you. They can talk you through next steps, and provide guidance on starting any medications. Another source of information about starting medicines, is the hospital pharmacist as well.

Unfortunately, we do not provide face to face support. There may be a support group based at your hospital. You can also search local cancer support groups on the Macmillan Cancer Support website by your local postcode

There is a UK organisation that has information on polycythaemia vera, they are called MPN Voice. They provide an online patient forum and offer a buddy peer support programme.

I hope this is helpful for you at this time,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
