Mr AL - suffering from long term rash that's getting worse

I'm suffering from a long term rash (approx a year) and it's getting worse. It covers most of my body but especially my arms, nothing on the neck or face though. I've got white coat syndrome so can't bring myself to go to the doctors despite my partner's insistence. Hope you can help.

  • I've tried everything from tea tree oil baths along with baking soda and eucalyptus salts, calamine lotion, sudacrem etc so I'm concerned it's something more sinister. I don't want to waste people's time but I'm thinking something's not right.

  • Hi Shildontunnel66 and thank you for your post.

I'm really sorry you’ve been coping with this rash for so long. It must feel tiring and worrying, and you’ve done really well to manage it on your own for almost a year.

I'm afraid we are unable to diagnose or tell you if anything is the matter, but most rashes have a straightforward and simple cause.

It is best to get it looked at just to be on the safe side.

I know going to the doctor makes you feel very anxious, so maybe you could speak to a pharmacist first. They maybe able to advise you further.

If you do end up having to see your GP explain to the receptionist when booking your appointment about your white coat syndrome. Maybe they could give you a quiet appointment at a time of day where you may not need to wait too long. You could take your partner with you.

The GP may need to  examine you and arrange more tests or a referral to a dermatologist if needed.

There is information on skin rash self care advice from St George’s University Hospital which you may find useful.

I hope you find the cause of your rash soon.

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
