Sore arm pit after having a lumpectomy and lymph node removal a week ago. What could be used to help?

Any ideas would be helpful. Last week had lumpectomy and lymph node removal. Getting over it ok but my under arm is getting more and more sore. Have washed and dried area well daily but haven't been using deodorant. I feel the soreness is a combination of sweat, plastic dressing and skin on skin rubbing together ideas on what could be used to help soreness would be really helpful.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and the soreness you have in your armpit.

Do continue to take pain killers if needed as some people can experience some nerve pain as the sensation returns to that part of the body.

Be as gentle as you can when washing the area and dab the area dry. A simple non perfumed cream such as E45 may be worth a try but don't apply too much.

If it doesn't ease or you notice anything else do let your breast care team know so they can assess you.

Do get back if you need to or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thanks very much for your help. I have now solved the problem in quite an unusual way. When I was telling my daughter she mentioned when my son in law joined the army many years ago they used to put sanitary towels inside shirts to prevent chaffing from kit bags. So I pinned one to the outside of my bra as high as my armpit and it works brilliant chaffing gone and absorbs sweat no need for creams and lotions.
