Bile Duct Cancer - husband will be starting chemo soon for 6 months. Is this the best course of treatment? So worried it's spread

My husband had whipples procedure in Nov 25 he is still recovering from this. Had first oncology appt today we were told they had removed 9 lymph nodes 1 had cancer in it and could not take a complete margin ( can’t remember where she said because it was too close to a blood vessel ) to start a course of chemo cabetapine in a couple of weeks for 6 months - is the correct/ best treatment. So worried it has spread somewhere else ? Still coming to terms with the whole diagnosis

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I’m really sorry to hear about your husband’s situation. I can imagine how overwhelming this must feel.

Treatment plans for bile duct cancer are very individual. Doctors look at things like the size of the tumour, whether it has spread, and someone’s overall health. Because we’re not involved in your husband’s care, we can’t comment directly on his treatment. But surgery is usually the main treatment, and capecitabine is a common chemotherapy used afterwards to reduce the chance of the cancer coming back.

From what you’ve said, it sounds like the cancer was in the bile duct and one lymph node, and both were removed. Scans before surgery would have shown if it had spread elsewhere. The chemotherapy now is to treat any tiny cells that can’t be seen on scans.

If you’re worried, it’s best to speak to his cancer team or his specialist nurse (CNS) if he has one, as they know his case in full and can reassure you.

If you’d like to talk things through, please feel free to get back in touch or call our nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 (Mon–Fri).

    Jemma
