In the scheme of things an daft question (but I want to feel human again)

Hi

Tonsil cancer, radiation included right tonsil and the glands in neck

A week since my final radiotherapy and 11 days since my last chemo, but only had three out of six chemos, 1st week, 3rd week, and 6th week, missed the others as wasnt well enough, and not having more

I am surprised at my recovery and cant help waiting for a sting in the tail, my angry skin on my neck (redness) has gone with the help of flamazine, and does not feel hot to touch,, no signs of darkening of skin yet,

The chemo and radiotherapy has had no effect on my hair, or anywhere else, yes my throat, my jaw, teeth, one side of tongue, inside of mouth, appetite and swallowing, weight lose of three stone (I had it to lose, but would prefer a sensible diet rather than like this)

Anyway, as a woman, its been 3 months since I had my hair done, so today was going to have it coloured and cut, not had anything done since the investigation leading to cancer diagnosis, my sister advised me to NOT get it coloured so soon after treatment, so I just had the wash, cut and blow dry,

Ive not had any hair loss with treatment, and my scalp feels fine, the oncologist said there was no risk of hair loss, with this in mind when can I have hair coloured again

I did say it was a trivial question in the scheme of things, but its a girl thing

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the treatment you needed to have but glad that you are now on the road to recovery.

As you say it is important to do something nice for yourself and feel a little more you again, so it is good to hear you were able to get your hair cut and styled.

Your sister is right in advising you against getting your hair coloured for now. Whilst you haven't had any hair loss ( not all chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss) it can make the hair weaker and scalp more sensitive. It is suggested that people wait 3-6 months following treatment before having their hair coloured and then a skin patch test should be done.

There is more information about using hair dyes and treatments after chemotherapy on the website so do take a look.

I hope this helped but do get back if you have any more questions. The helpline is also open weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
