HPV positive with no change but other symptoms I've had in the past are worrying me. Could this all be linked?

Hello,

I have had my results come back as positive with no change. I had been referred to gynecology for abnormal bleeding and extreme pain but they found no signs of endometriosis. This was a few years ago now and no smear was done as I was too young.  I had my smear in December and the day after I was in excruciating pain in the area of my cervix. I have had some history of bleeding after intercourse and finding myself having unusual and strong smelling discharge ( I have had Sti tests which have always been negative).  My main question is can this all be linked? I don’t want to bother NHS doctors with how busy they are if it’s just coincidental. HPV itself has no symptoms and there’s no cellular change so am I overthinking? If anyone can point me in the right direction before I hassle my GP I would appreciate the guidance! For context I also had the excruciating pain with the coil that was sitting perfectly fine when checked.

Thank you!!

  • Hello Lisa-1234 and thank you for posting.

I’m sorry to hear about the symptoms you’ve been experiencing, and I can understand how worrying this must feel.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common infection among sexually active people. Most types are harmless, and in the majority of cases, the immune system clears the virus without people ever knowing they had it. A few types can cause cell changes that may develop into cancer, but HPV itself does not cause symptoms. The only way to know whether someone has HPV is through their cervical screening test.

The symptoms you’re having will not be caused by HPV, so it is worth getting checked by your doctor again, especially if things are getting worse or not improving. They will be able to examine you and give you more information.

I hope you can get the support you need soon. Please feel free to get back in touch with us if you have any more questions or would like to talk things through. If you would prefer to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we’re available Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, on our freephone number 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
