Received letter for my father. Can anyone explain what this information means?

He had a ct scan in November colonoscopy.  Results stating or investigation from the hospital states

Mildly enlarged retroperitoneal lymphoma nodes 1.1 cm retro canal node previously in June 2021 mri image was 0.4 cm.

Letter states they are suspicious of metastatic nodal disease as my dad had prostate cancer on June 2021.  Last PSA in April 2025 was 0.01.

can any explain or give me any information and could it be something else?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you are worried about your father and his Prostate cancer.

It is difficult for anyone to say what this change in node size might be, except his hospital team. Nodes can change for a number of reasons, like cancer or infection, but it is about your fathers doctors working out what this change is for him and if it needs to be acted on.

Metastatic nodal disease means they are concerned that the cancer could have become active and the cancer cells have spread from the original site (the prostate) into the nodes.

They may investigate your dad further, and discuss him at an Multi Disciplinary meeting with other health professionals. At this meeting they will discuss his situation, his general health, and make a decision on what is the best plan of action.

This link to our pages talk through metastatic prostate cancer and its treatments if helpful.

Take care and if you would like to speak to the nurses on the helpline the number is 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.

  • Thank you!  Does this mean if discussing him they do know the outcome of the inflammation?  How will they know in a meeting if this is cancer or non cancerous?   Sorry if this is a really silly question.  Thank you for replying.

  • Hi there and thanks for getting back to us

Unfortunately as no one here is directly involved in your dads care we can't say exactly what this is or what will happen next.

Try and sit tight as best you can for now and wait for the doctors to speak with your dad and yourself in regards to what they think this may be caused by.

The specialist doctors looking after your dad will be very familiar with this type of situation. If further tests need to be done they will discuss this but if they are certain about the cause from the information they have from both the scan and psa reading they will talk this through.

It is best now to wait until your dad has spoken with his team to determine the next steps.

    Take care

    Naomi
