Hello Hubclaire1963 and thanks for your post,
I am sorry to hear about your dad. I can understand that 22 weeks sounds like a long time but hopefully when your dad starts the treatment and knows what to expect you may find that it is better then expected. The aim with the chemotherapy is to shrink the cancer and hopefully make the surgery easier to perform.
You may find it helpful to attend one of his appointments so you can see what is involved. Your dad will probably sitting in a room with other patients having similar treatments.
Each time he attends the chemotherapy clinic he will be assessed and the nurses and doctors involved in his care will discuss his treatment and whether he has had any side effects.
There are lots of different medications that the doctors can give to help support a patient going through treatment. Your dad may find it helpful to record any symptoms so he can remember to tell the doctors when he sees them at the next appointment.
Bowel Cancer UK have some information about how you may be able to support someone going through treatment which you may find helpful to read through.
We also have some information on our website about how to support someone with cancer.
Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you would like to talk things through.
The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.
All the best,
Catherine
