Bladder Cancer

I went for a cystoscopy due to having bladder stones to be told I had a tumour on my bladder and had to get out to sleep to remove the tumour. No further details were given and told it’s up to 8 week wait to have surgery. Is this a normal wait time, when will I find out what stage it’s at?
so many questions as no explanation really given at hospital

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

I can appreciate that you want to know more about your situation.

We have information on getting diagnosed with bladder cancer

I am unsure about what your hospital team think may be needed to be done prior to your planned surgery. Sometimes other scans such as CT scans are requested, as well as a pre op assessment. They may have taken biopsies or already sent some bladder tissue off for pathology testing and analysis as well. You may need to ring the urology department at the hospital for more information. Usually nearer the time of surgery, further communication is sent out to you. The hospital usually send out a summary letter to you and your GP about recent investigations and what is planned. Scans and cystoscopy can help determine the stage of the bladder cancer, sometimes the stage is revised after further bladder surgery as more tissue may be sent off for testing. Surgeons will remove tissue around a cancer, to ensure what they call a healthy margin of tissue, but this is checked by sending the tumour tissue off. They can also tell the cancer cell type and the grade by testing the tissue further.

If you have the NHS App on your smartphone, then results or letters can be viewed on there. Unfortunately, there are waits for planned surgery.

You could contact the PALS (patient advice and liason service) officer at the hospital trust and ask them to look into this for you.

I hope that you get to know more soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
