Platelets low and struggling to get them back up.

Hi my Nan is going through chemotherapy and is told her platelets need to be 100 to have this done.

she is now 2 weeks behind on her treatment as they have been about 91-92. I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue and if so what you have done to help bring them up to have a consistent run of treatment.

thank you in advance for any replies.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that you would want to try and help your Nan at this time.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything to recommend to help raise a platelet level in the blood. This is because these cells are produced in the bone marrow, and the activity can be affected by disease, or the side effects of some drugs. This is not uncommon, and more so in older people, because their bone marrow activity is slower anyway. Her specialist will have come across this before, and will know how to manage this moving forward. Sometimes patients need to have their treatment delayed to allow the bone marrow to recover.

    I hope this helps explain,

    Kind regards,

    Vanda
