Post Radiotherapy - really suffering with hotness. Is there anything that can help?

I’m really suffering with hotness around 6-10 in the evening, much to my husbands discomfort. He always feels cold, it’s becoming a battle with the thermostat and I’m so unhappy because I’m so hot in the evenings

Do you think anything may help given that I’ve already gone through early menopause due to a hysterectomy at 47.

  • Hello TracyWM and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your hot flushes in the evening and I can imagine how uncomfortable this must be for you.

We have some information on our website about coping with hormone symptoms. In the information it has guidelines on practical things that you can do such as wearing cotton clothing or lots of different layers, making sure that you have a fan at hand and avoiding drinks containing caffeine and any alcohol. It may help to keep a diary to see if there are any triggers.

If these measures don't seem to work then do discuss this with your GP. A lot of hospitals have menopause clinics that you could be referred to. Your GP may suggest a course of medication such as a low dose antidepressant if all the practical measures don't seem to be helping.

Maggies, the cancer charity, offer in-person and online courses with experts on menopause. It could also help to hear from other patients on what works for them on these courses, even if you don't live near a Maggie's, would welcome you to join an online class.

The NHS has got tips on things you can do to help with the menopause as well.

I do hope that some of these links and ideas may help. If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
