Terrified of breast clinic appointment

Hi. I had my first routine mammogram on Monday 5th Jan and got a letter5 days later to say I need further tests. I have no idea what to expect and I’m driving myself insane with worry.  Everyone keeps saying it will be fine and to not worry but I can’t stop crying and worrying. Please can you let me know what might happen on the day and will the consultant etc tell me straight away why I have been called back.  Thank you so much

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you but please try not to over think things too much for now.

Many women get recalled after a mammogram as often the images aren't clear enough or there may be a slight change from a previous scan that needs a closer look.

Remember there can be breast changes caused by other things as well as cancer but if something is picked up on a mammogram it does need to be checked out, just to be on the safe side.

At your appointment they should be able to tell you the reason you have been recalled but as I say it will because of one of the above reasons.

You may need to have another mammogram alongside an ultrasound and from there a biopsy if any abnormal area is found. It is usually only a biopsy that can confirm the cause of a breast abnormality. People normally wait a couple of weeks for breast biopsy results if this is needed.

As I say the doctor or nurse at your appointment will talk everything that needs to happen next with you.

Please take this one step at a time until you have all the information about what this may be.

Do get back in touch if you would like or give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here week days 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
