Blood in stool and iron levels have decreased

I’m 21F (nearly 22) and had blood in my stool on 2 occasions about 2 and a half years ago. Then 6 months ago I saw blood in my stool again, went to GP, had a fit test and blood test done. Fit test was negative. A couple months ago I saw a bit of blood again, but it wasn’t lots and since I’d just had a fit test I decided to not doing anything, but just keep monitoring. Then, for a separate reason (no period for 6 months) I had another blood test. I’m feeling concerned as my iron had dropped from 53 ug/L in my first blood test to 20 ug/L in the one I had last week. What if this is related to the blood I was seeing in my stool? Should I contact my GP again? I’m so anxious

  • Hello, and thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry you have been going through this worry about your stools and iron levels. It is good to let the GP know about what you are experiencing and ask them more about your iron levels.

Once they have all the information they are able to assess and decide if anything further needs to be done or investigated.

Take care and do remember that there are other reasons for blood to appear in poo, and lower iron levels, but it is about finding what is the cause for you.

    Sarah.
