Cramps in chest 8 months after mastectomy

I have suddenly started getting random cramps in chest 8 months after a mastectomy. It’s happened about 5 times in the past month. Twice it was really painful and took my breath away but the other times was much milder.

  • Hi Stefie,

I am sorry to hear about your chest pains. Why not mention them to your GP and get them checked out? It is possible that they could be nothing to do with your mastectomy, but more to do with your circulation. I hope that your GP can give you some answers. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Stefie, and thank you for posting,

I'm sorry to hear that you’ve needed treatment for breast cancer, and that you’re now experiencing episodes of chest cramps. That must feel worrying.

As we’re not involved in your care, we can’t say for certain what might be causing these symptoms or whether they could be related to your radiotherapy. As Jolamine mentioned, the safest option is to have this checked by a doctor. If you have a breast care nurse, it would be helpful to let them know as well, as they may be able to offer more specific advice, as they will know your situation.

I hope you’re able to get some help with this soon.

Please feel free to contact us again at any time. If you’d like to speak to a nurse, we’re available on our freephone number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.

    With best wishes,

    Jemma

  • Thanks for the prompt reply.
I was diagnosed with DCIS high grade 27 mm in Feb 2023
I had wide local excision in march 2023 and re excision for clear margins, then in mid July 2023 I had radiotherapy.

I didn’t have any worrying side effects to any of the treatment and thought initially the cramps were from the surgery for mastectomy but now I suspect it might be from the radiotherapy 2.5 yrs ago?

I will mention it at my next follow up in April .
