Dry cough and tightness in chest after radiotherapy

I finished 15 rounds of radiotherapy 3 weeks ago and feel so ill and exhausted. I had trouble swallowing for a few weeks which has now passed. For the last week I have had a dry cough which gets worse when I talk and I feel a tightness in my chest when I walk around. I am asthmatic. Can radiotherapy to your chest damage your lungs?

  • Hello, and thank you for posting,

I’m sorry to hear about the symptoms you’re experiencing. This sounds very uncomfortable for you.

Without knowing your full situation, it’s difficult to say exactly what’s causing them. However, if you’ve had radiotherapy to the chest area, side effects such as breathlessness, a dry cough, and difficulty swallowing can occur.

It’s also quite common to feel very tired and unwell after treatment has finished. Radiotherapy continues to work for a short time after the last session, which means some people feel worse before they start to feel better.

If your symptoms become more severe or difficult to manage, please contact your hospital team or your GP. They can assess you to rule out any other causes and help you manage these side effects. Your body has been through a lot, and recovery can take time, often several weeks or even months.

I hope this helps in some way and that you start to feel better soon. If you’d like to speak with one of our nurses, please call us on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

    Jemma
