Advice please - Worried about my symptoms but feel I see the GP too much for other things. I had leukaemia when I was little and have bad health anxiety

Over the past couple of weeks I have had a bit of a cold, I have shaken most of that off now but still have a a very slight cough and need to blow my nose.

Over the past week or so I have had pain in almost all of my joints including my finger and toes and the right side of my neck feels tight and sore.

I have previously had leukemia when I was little and have pretty bad health anxiety. I want to go to my GP or out of hours but feel I go for a lot of stuff.

I'm pretty scared and just feel depressed with it.

  • Hi blaupunkt120

I am sorry to read all you have been through as a child and also how you are feeling now.   Please visit your GP its what they are there for.It does not matter how many times you have been.   You mention being pretty scared and depressed, you have been through a lot.  Do you have family or friends that can also support you.  I know its hard to open up.  Please don't suffer alone in silence.  Taking steps to get the help and support you need will hopefully help put your mind at ease and also help with depression.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Thank you very much for your response. Honestly I feel sometimes when I tell family I feel like they don't take me seriously and just say there's nothing wrong with you. Which there might not be but I don't think they know how anxious I get with this stuff. I'll try and get an appointment tomorrow hopefully. Again thank you for your response.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear that you were treated with leukaemia as a child and the health anxiety you now have.

As I am sure you are aware at this time of year there are many viruses going around and it does sound like you are recovering from a cold.

People are often left with a cough and sniffly nose and some aches and pains for a good few weeks. I would say if it doesn't improve over the next week or you remain worried go and see your GP then so they can assess you.

As I say there is a good chance this is nothing to be concerned about but if it persists it is best to get checked out.

I hope you have some strategies to manage your health anxiety if not do take a look at websites such as MIND or Anxiety UK to find some ways to manage the thoughts and feelings that anxiety can bring.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thanks Naomi for your response. Yeah there certainly are many viruses going around at the moment. I'm hoping that its just the remaining part of my cold that I'm trying to shake off. The more I look the more I worry. I can feel lymph nodes on my neck and groin although I don't actually know if they are swollen. I get pain in all my joints but I keep thinking about the ones in my fingers because I've never had that before. Plus I have lost a couple of pounds in the last week or so but I don't know if that's due to stress or not. Again thanks for your response.
