Lymphoedema - have been referred to the lymphoedema clinic but I'm trying to do arm exercises in the meantime. Is there anything else I can try?

I went to the GP with swelling in my left arm which I have had 16 lymph nodes taken out while having cancer treatment,  it's taken over 3 weeks to see a consultant who is referring me to the Lymphoedema clinic, the only real advice I have received has been from the internet, the main reason I am worried I have seen on the internet  photos of very extreme cases and also the information says early intervention gives the best results.  I am doing exercises and ordered a message machine I also bought some support bandage which Im finding uncomfortable, can you please let me know if I am doing my treatment correctly and if there is anything else I can try Thank you

  • Hi Spanner1958,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you now have swelling and are waiting to be seen at the Lymphoedema clinic.  It sounds as if you are doing the right things by exercising and massaging your limb.

I am not a doctor or nurse. I have had Lymphoedema in both arms and legs since I had cancer treatment 16 years ago. I am seen every 3 months at the Lymphoedema clinic. They measure the girth of my arms and legs in 1" increments from top to bottom to see if there is any change from one visit to the next. They also supply me with compression sleeves and stockings, as well as compression gloves. These are all replaced every few months. I also have thicker arm sleeves, which I wear at night.

I do hope that your appointment comes through soon and that something can be done to help you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. WE are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

thank you for your support it's been a difficult time fighting this getting any worse on my own.  I do feel for you as mine is at the moment in my left arm  which I find very a big worry, and the lymphoedema clinic door no where nearer than when I was diagnosed.

Thank you also for the information about the support wear I bought some support bandage tube grip which is fine for my lower arm but very uncomfortable on the top arm it makes sense to have correctly fitting sleeves so will have to wait till the clinic actually get around to seeing me.

    Will keep you posted

many thanks again for your support

    Anna xx

  • Hello Spanner1958 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I do hope that you hear from the lymphoma clinic soon.

We do have some information on our website about treating lymphoedema with exercise whilst you are waiting.

It has useful information on tips that you can do to help manage the lymphoedema.

You also may find it helpful to get in touch with The Lymphoedema Support Network

as they will have access to more videos of different exercises that you can do at home to help manage your symptoms.

Maggies have more information about managing lymphoedema.

I do hope some of these links may be helpful.

Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you would like to talk things through.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
