Why, Why, Why, WHY dont they listen

Why, Why, Why don't the medical profession listen

I always tell GPs, Doctors, consultants, pharmacists that I although controlled I have Epilepsy and take medication , so every time I speak to a medical professional, I always inform them about medications I take as they have many contra indications

Now since this cancer started Im having earache and headaches, paracetamol just works, codine well constipation ans addictive, oral morphine makes me vomit,  the doctor prescribed Amitriptaline  that's a major NO  with epilepsy, at the time I was given the pills by the nurse I asked had the doctor checked, the reply "oh yes I'm sure he has"  so I checked and it raises the incidences of seizures

  • Hi Elizabethr and thank you for your post.

I’m sorry to hear about your cancer and the symptoms you’re having. It must feel upsetting if you think people aren’t listening to you.

The British National Formulary (BNF) which lists medicines, says seizures with amitriptyline are uncommon. This might be why your doctor chose it. You could ask your doctor to explain why they prescribed it, knowing you have epilepsy. If you’re still worried or unhappy with the answer, you could speak to the Patient Advisory Liaison Service (PALS) team if it was a hospital doctor, or the practice manager if it was your GP.

Maybe you could request to be referred to the pain team at your local hospital who specialise in cancer related pain.

I hope you get this issue resolved and find some pain relief that works for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
