Blood in toilet- should get checked?

having a bit of health anxiety here- Over the past 6 ish months whenever ive gone to the toilet- often times there is blood and sometimes i find blood without going to the toilet- in my underwear- and it definitely isn’t menstrual. There’s a history of cancer in my family, is this worth bringing up to the doctor? It varies in colour and amount but usually it’s quite a bit of dark blood.

  • Hello Bambi442 and thanks for your post,

I would make an appointment with your GP and discuss your concerns with them.

You may find that you have haemorrhoids which can be easily treated so try not to over think it for now.

Do remember that is what your GP is there for. if you have any health concerns it is important that you feel able to chat this through with your GP. Often there is a simple explanation that is far less serious then cancer but it is important to rule anything serious out.

Cancer is a common disease particularly as we get older but if there is a lot of cancer in your family you could talk this through with your GP. Your GP will probably ask about the type of cancers your relatives had and the ages when they were diagnosed.

    I hope this helps.

If you would like to ring and chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
