Ascites

My mum has ocular melanoma which spread to the liver and spinal cord two months ago. She has declined so rapidly in the last two months and has an incredibly swollen stomach due to ascites. She is most comfortable lying down, but we have been advised it would be a good idea to get it drained to ease the pressure she is feeling in her stomach. However, the only way they can do this is if she goes to hospital and would potentially have to wait around in a chair for hours (which is not comfortable) and potentially ignored if she needs pain relief. Is there any other way this can be done where we wouldn’t have to traumatise her by making her even more uncomfortable? Even private options? I’m at a loss because we want her to get it drained and be comfortable but not if she will have to be in pain in a chair for potentially hours until they are ready?

  • Hi there and thank you for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum, this must be a difficult time for all the family.

Having ascites drained often makes the patient feel so much more comfortable so it understandable the doctors are suggesting this for your mum.

I would suggest asking the team involved whether there is a way your mum can get this done without her having to wait long on a hard upright chair in a waiting room. They may be able to schedule the appointment so she can go straight onto a couch or suggest an alternative.

Some hospices carry out procedures such as the draining of ascites so do also enquire about the nearest hospice to your mum and what services they provide.

I hope this is helpful and your mum gets the relief she needs at this time to make her more comfortable.

Do get back in touch if needed and you are also welcome to call the nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer. We are here weekdays 9-5.

    All the best
