Radiotherapy/Chemotherapy

I have lung cancer and a small tumour in my throat. I have had three weeks Radiotherapy and two lots of Chemotherapy.  I had half my left lung removed in March this year and this lot of treatment started thee weeks ago. I have another three weeks of Radiotherapy to go and Chemotherapy until the end of February.

I am having problems swallowing. My Consultant has prescribed soluable paracetamol and a mouth wash which i rinse and swallow. I can only eat soup and icecream.

Does anyone have any suggestions I can try to help with my swallowing?

  • Hi SheRobb and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the treatment you are undergoing, this must be a difficult time for you.

Unfortunately for patients having several weeks of radiotherapy to the head and neck area often find they start having issues with eating and swallowing.

Whilst gargling paracetamol can ease any discomfort it won't necessarily reduce any swelling or narrowing of the tissues the radiotherapy is causing.

Most patients will have to adapt their diet by only eating a soft or liquid diet that often goes down much more easily whilst having their treatment. There is more information about eating and drinking in the general radiotherapy side effects on the about cancer section of the website.

Do speak with the radiotherapy department staff about your ongoing issues so they can also advise you and help you manage this.

I hope this is helpful but do get back in touch if you would like. The nurses are also on the helpline weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to call us.

Wishing you all the best with the rest of your treatment

    Take care

    Naomi
