Cancer fears - I have extreme fatigue and have started spotting again

Hello. I am 55 years old. I am postmenopausal and due to previous spotting I had the Mirena coil fitted in May. I have a history of bowel cancer (surgery and mop up chemo 2023-2024) and a colposcopy for precancerous cells in 1996/7.

I have extreme fatigue and started spotting again at the start of this week. I am petrified it might be something sinister.

Please help.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening and can appreciate that unexplained symptoms can prey on your mind especially with everything you've already been through.

Spotting after a Mirena coil is quite common months after it's fitted. Some people can get on and off bleeding for a while as the womb lining adjusts. It doesn't automatically mean that something sinister is going on but because you're postmenopausal and have a medical history that makes you feel more anxious, it's a good idea to get checked out, so do make an appointment to see your doctor so they can assess you and advise you further.

There is information on the NHS website about post menopausal bleeding that you may find useful.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
