Advice for colonoscopy

I have had blood on the tissue after wiping on and off for a year now. I have recently had over a stone of weight loss suddenly in a couple of months. I was asked to do a FIT test which has come back as a score of 200+. There was a lot of blood over the stools. The GP are sending me for a 2WW colorectal cancer pathway where he said I’ll probably be asked for a colonoscopy. However, I have multiple health issues including heart issues and seizures, which I will be at high risk for during this procedure.

I’m worried on how I will cope with the test, and if I should be worried of 200 plus score. Is there any way of getting me safely through the test?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are worried about the colonoscopy. Lots of people, with various health conditions, have this procedure. Luckily these hospital teams do them everyday, so they will know what to do to make this as safe as possible, to get the answers they need. Sometimes they will assess someone face to face and then might choose to do less invasive test such as CT colonography. Sometimes colonoscopy teams will liaise with other medical teams, like cardiology to ensure people are triaged carefully and thoroughly.

There are many different reasons for a FIT result of 200, inflammatory bowel, diverticular disease or polyps could be the cause, but only a camera and biopsies can confirm this.

Take care and I hope things get sorted for you.
