Abnormal cells

Hi, in April this year I needed a colonoscopy and biopsy taken as I had high risk hpv they said I had cin 2 was found I then had a letz procedure done apparently the abnormal cells were removed, I went to the docs last month for my smear (6 months later) there’s been no change in the smear results so I’ve been referred back to the hospital they said I need to have another colonoscopy (I think I’ve spelt it right) and more biopsy’s will need to be taken I’m worried sick my hospital appointment is next week I’m scared and worried it’s cancer

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear that you have had another abnormal cervical screening ( smear) test result.

Please try not to over think this if you can. Cervical screening is all about preventing cancer by picking up abnormality at an early stage where it can be monitored and treated.

Unfortunately some people do need more than one LLETZ treatment to clear abnormal cells and the 6 month screening following treatment is to check this has worked. As you say you will now go back to colposcopy where they can take another look to check out the abnormalities.

The biopsy is the best way of finding out the type and grade of abnormality. CIN stands for cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasm which are pre cancerous cells, not cancer. They are graded 1, 2 or 3 in terms of severity but even CIN3 isn't cancer. It often takes a long time for these cells to turn into cancer, so please try not to worry.

At your appointment the colposcopist will explain what they are doing and what needs to happen next but as I say it isn't unusual for some people to need more than one treatment.

I hope this helps but do get back in touch if you need to.

    Take care

    Naomi
