metastatic cholangiocarcinoma cancer

My sister has metastatic cholangiocarcinoma cancer which I'm told has no cure. Without treatment she's told she will die in a matter of weeks. Does anyone happen to know of any ground breaking clinical trials or anything that we can explore to ideally cure her, lengthen her life expectancy or at least give us some kind of hope. I am so desperate and not ready to accept that she's going to die at 41 years old.

Thanks

  • Hello Dave and thanks for posting

I see that you have sent us an email enquiry about this and hope you don't mind receiving a similar reply again.

I'm sorry to read about your sister. This must be an incredibly difficult time for the whole family.

As nurses, we don't recommend treatments as this needs to come from your sister's specialist team who are familiar with all her medical details. We have information on cholangiocarcinoma and how it may be treated on our website.

Patients usually need to have a fairly good performance (health and fitness level) status to join most trials. And sadly, not everyone is well enough to join one.

Without being involved in your sister’s care we usually suggest when she is interested in joining a trial that she speaks to her specialist or GP.

We have information about taking part in trials and a trials database on our website, which you can look at. This lists the trials that we are aware of and have permission to put on the website. You can search for cholangiocarcinoma trials on the site.

Although our organisation help to fund trials, we are not directly involved in recruiting people to participate in them. This is done by the doctors and nurses working at the hospitals involved in running the trials and a medical referral is required for anyone to be considered. So I'm afraid I can't put your sister on to a trial she would need to talk to her doctors about this.

Most trials will exclude people who are currently having treatment, or who have had other treatments in the last month or so. For each trial entry on our database there is a “who can enter” box which explains the entry requirements for that particular trial, and at the bottom, you can read where the trials are taking place (location).

You may also find it helpful to contact the AMMF charity that supports people with cholangiocarcinoma.

I hope this is helpful. Please get back to us if you have any questions. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are here Monday to Friday, 9-5, freephone 0808 800 4040

I hope this information is of some use.
