Nausea and food. My husband is really struggling. Is this common with bile duct cancer patients and can hypnotherapy help?

My husband was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma last October 2024. Subsequently further tests and scans show that the cancer has also spread to his liver.

He has undergone chemo and immunotherapy from Dec 25- May 25.

Then he persisted with limited success taking palliative chemo tablets from August to mid October with several AKI situations caused by diarrhoea and dehydration.

Since October 17th my husband has not received any treatment but he has been left seriously weakened and underweight through all these side effects.

This is not helped by his poor diet caused by intolerance to a large variety of foods due to smell, texture and taste.

He is mostly surviving on Forticip drinks, cups of tea, tinned fruit and a mouthful of banana. He can tolerate an egg yolk and smooth tinned or packet soups.

We have tried all sorts of food and drinks but many result in him being very sick, usually bringing up a watery bile like liquid almost as soon as the food touches his mouth.

Currently he is back in hospital and he is being treated for a 4th AKI.

They are trying to replace the low potassium and magnesium and other chemicals. My concern is how to maintain these levels when we eventually go home.

Are these symptoms a common situation in patients with bile duct cancer?

Also is there any evidence for the benefits of hypnotherapy to help combat the aversion and nauseating effects of food?

I would be very grateful to hear your comments.

Yours Vanda

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

I am sorry to hear about your husband, and can appreciate that this is a difficult time for you. If a hospital dietician is involved, then they can refer him onto a community based dietician for follow care and diet advice at home. His GP can refer him, if this is not done by the hospital. Unfortunately, this type of cancer can cause digestion and nausea issues. We do have a section about types of sickness and sickness medications Sometimes, patients need to take a combination of different medications to combat nausea and gastric secretions. His GP can arrange blood tests to check your husband's potassium and magnesium levels, as part of checking his urea and electrolytes, (chemical levels in his bloodstream).

In the community at home, a community based palliative care team can help with difficult symptoms to control. They have specialist expertise. Again, the hospital team or the GP can refer your husband to this team for an assessment. I'm not sure that hypnotherapy would particularly help with a physical based issue. Some patients find using the travel sickness wristbands (seabands) of use. Relaxation, and the use of aromatherapy oils can help distract from nausea. Distraction activities such as listening to music with headphones can help reduce the experience of difficult symptoms. Acupuncture may help, in combination with other methods, and medications.

    I hope that this helps,

    Kind regards,

    Vanda

  • Hi Vanda, my wife also has Bile Duct cancer and she too has really struggled with food. This has mainly been caused by her high levels of calcium in her blood due to the cancer Metastasis on her back. The only thing she seems to cope with is anything citrus and very cold/hot foods but small portions at a time. There are some dissolvable tablets which she takes for her electrolytes and potassium so may be worth asking about them. Sending my best wishes to you in this challenging time.
